A beginner's course in exercise.
I'm one of those people who exercise for a day and then call it quits, so I'm really not the person who should be giving you advise on how to exercise. But, I will pass on some advice that I learned from my trials and tribulations of trying to start an exercise routine.
Getting Started
The hardest part of trying to start an exercise routine is giving up what little free time you have in order to head to the gym for an hour. This is why I prefer exercising at home with a video. If you are severely out of shape I recommend starting with a stretching routine video. This will not only build up your flexibility, but start you off feeling good about exercise because it won't hurt your body and will even make you feel energized.
The Next Step
After consistently stretching your body out for a week and getting up to a level ready for exercise you can start your search for the type of exercise that suits you best. Libraries are a great place to find exercise videos you want to try out. You'll want to find three videos you really like. I recommend one for aerobic(dance), one for strength building(Pilates), and one for increased flexibility and balance(Yoga). The preferred workout routine is Monday, Wednesday, Friday. If you feel up to it you can also do your stretching workout on off days. The reason you don't workout every day is because working out past your regular limit tears the muscles in your body in order to grow bigger. When you feel sore it is because your muscles are tearing, growing, and regenerating. Your muscles need a day off to heal themselves.
Congratulations!
If you have successfully instituted a exercise routine in to your life, congratulations, you've made it farther than I have! Once you get bored of your exercise videos, or are consistently not sore from your workouts move up to the next level or try out some new videos just to keep things fun.
